The Farm Stove Project /Proyecto Estufa Finca Costa Rica:
Today, nearly half of the world’s families will cook their meals on a traditional open fire stove. Today, approximately one person every 20 minutes will die from the effects of breathing this smoke in their homes. The burden of this falls most heavily on the woman and children.
This cost is not measured in human lives alone, inefficient use of wood is a major contributor to deforestation worldwide. The soot formed by this open burning is now understood to be a major contributor to climate change, as it melts glaciers and polar ice.
Today Seattle based non-profit SeaChar.Org is working with partners around the globe to Reinvent Fire. Our elegant and affordable Estufa Finca (Farm Stove) works by burning the smoke that would escape a traditional fire. Able to use a wide range of waste biomass as fuel, these stoves will save lives and trees. As an add benefit the stoves produce the soil building charcoal known as biochar, a form of fixed biocarbon which can store excess CO2 for thousands of years.
You can help us bring this radically new technology to those most in need. We are working with La Alianza (The Alliance of Organic Farmers of Costa Rica), the Woman of APORTES (The Givers) Sol Colibri Coffee and the National University of Costa Rica, which will place and carefully monitor thousands of the clean burning, fuel efficient stoves in the homes of the workers in rural Costa Rica, who harvest your coffee beans and grow you cocoa.

SeaChar.Org is working to support this project in many ways. You can help today to build a better future. You tax deductible donation of $ 40 dollars can put a stove in a home, $ 10 can support a training workshop for local women or give $ 100 to help SeaChar.Org continue this valuable work around the world. And please ask about the opportunities to volunteer your time and talent.

The SSCC SeaChar Carbon Garden:
The Seattle Biochar Working Group is a grass-roots, non-profit working to build a more sustainable infrastructure. Biochar is the fixed carbon bi-product (Charcoal) , which is made along with clean renewable energy from waste biomass like blackberry bramble and broken pallets. When applied to soils this form of carbon is very durable and can be stored for hundreds to thousands of years.
For thousands of years farmers have used charcoal to build healthier and more productive soils. This USDA ARS supported 5 year plot test is designed to test this hypothesis and help us learn how to use this potential to manage the carbon cycle, by lowering atmospheric CO2 levels, decreasing GHG emissions from food production and producing carbon negative, green energy.

Education and Outreach: The Education and Outreach committee is focused on educating the community about the carbon cycle and BioChar’s potential role in helping to mitigate global warming.

Pyrolysis: The Pyrolysis Committee hopes to develop, refine, and scale the means of production for creating, handling, and amending BioChar.
